I am Dr. Tara Brooks. It wasn’t easy becoming a veterinarian. It wasn’t easy growing a clinic that caters to thousands of animals yearly. What is HARD – for me – is knowing that there are clearly people out there, that don’t understand how to take care of animals.

And we’re talking about ALL kinds of animals, folks. Not just pets. Sure, you’ll hear about dogs, cats, birds, fish and snakes. But what about…horses? Lizards? This really is Lions & Tigers & Bears – oh my!

It’s time for another episode of Animal Wise America…

The Animal Wise America Podcast- Three Vets Walk into a Studio Episode

Depending on which source you read, anywhere from the Washington Post, to Linked In, to ABC news online, to multiple veterinary school sites, you will find that one of the most desired careers in children from the age of 6-13 is that of a veterinarian. Sources site it is among the top ten list for career choice in pre-college high-school teens as well. With all this amazing draw to the discipline of veterinary medicine, I thought we would address what is behind this attraction? Why are children drawn to this career? And why on earth have there been so many trying to talk them out of it? Today we will have a round table discussion of three local veterinarians and discuss these very things, along with multiple other questions…Are you ready? Well, then get comfortable and prepare to hear the real world of veterinary medicine (at least what three of us think about it) on this episode of Animal Wise America!

Loving & Interacting with Animals is All About Language —  A Visit with Steve Vossenkemper from Here for the Dogs

Have you ever been misunderstood? Where the words that were coming out of your mouth are deemed fictitious because the language your body is putting off is contradictory to the spoken words? As you may or may not know, communication is made up of verbal and non-verbal interactions with non-verbal being far more of the total than verbal. In fact, from a variety of different source it is estimated that anywhere between 75 and 93% could be non-verbal.

Animal Oncology —  A Visit with Greg Houdyshell from Mutts N Stuff – The Myths of The Pit Bull…

When you hear the word pitbull, what emotions rushes to your mind? Do you quake with fear believing the breed to be nothing but a menace to society and wondering why they aren’t all banned from the Earth, or do you smile internally while you hang your head in sadness understanding the preconceived notions that a beautiful breed is believed to be a killer, when that is simply not the case, or are you on the fence? Do you even know what emotion hits you as you read story after story of an aggressive pitbull turning on its owner or the plays to your heartstrings of the softness of a weak bully, being used as a bait dog, still seeking human attention after losing a leg and one of its eyes to train other dogs how to kill? Hope Mending Hearts Foundation

The Fall provides us tremendously powerful efforts when it comes to memories. The family. The food. The relationships and well – relationships include pets. Whether it’s that dog that makes it’s way into family photos or just the kitty that ends up on your lap at the onset of turkey coma, they too provide us with true value when it comes to life’s experience. What also comes with the pet experience? Emergencies. The bottom line is that dogs eat things they’re not supposed to. Cats get a hold of tinsel and folks: these aren’t GOOD things – worse yet – they’re expensive fixes. With costs ranging into the thousands, the bottom line is what would you do if Trigger or Molly were on the Vet table and you didn’t have the $1400 for a life-saving procedure? Well, there is hope…

Pound Pals Cat Aid: An Interview with Jackie Schneiderman and Susan Bauer!

We have talked on many episodes just how hard it is to financially care for our companion animals. The expenses can sometimes overwhelm our budget unless we plan ahead. Resources for injured animals are hard to come by, and if the animals is an injured feral or stray cat, options for help are extremely scarce. A lot of times, these cats go untreated because no one either wants, nor can afford, to care for a cat not their own. How do you feel when you see a stray cat running around with a limp? Or observing a momma cat all skin and bones struggling to feed the clowder of kittens chasing along behind her? Do you chase them off your property with a stick or a BB gun? Do you call animal control to come exterminate them? Have you ever thought, “I want to help, but I don’t know how or I can’t afford it!”? Well, now there is help for these stray, homeless cats in need of medical care. CAT-Aid will assist injured cats who have nowhere else to turn. That’s right, Cat-Aid is here to help!

The Animal Wise America Podcast
Season 1, Episode 12 — “What Do YOU Value in a Doggy Day Care? The Watering Bowl with Ryan Wolk”

Are you a dog owner, or are you a person whose dog owns you? Is your dog simply your dog, or is your dog an actual member of the family? What do you do with that family member when you’re at work all day? Left home alone in a crate? Left home alone to ward off the scary mailman or chew up the sofa? Or hire a babysitter because, of course, your dog is just a furry child, right?! Now, we have talked before on Animal Wise America how important it is to not treat your dog like a human child. However, there are some crossover philosophies that can muddy the waters a little bit. Hopefully, we will discuss that out on today’s episode of Animal Wise America. Because today, just like every day on Animal Wise America, we are going to provide you information and a resource you may not have known about, one that may just improve your relationship with your dog!

Season 1, Episode 7 — “Here for the Dogs! Coach Steve Vossenkemper”

Well, today is something a bit out of the ordinary. I mean, every show tends to bring you new and informative things to think about and resources to utilize, but, today, I am covering a topic that I did not even know existed until about 4 days ago! Now, I know you are all aware of sports coaches. Even my very recreational, co-ed softball team had a coach. I’m sure you have heard of business coaches, those men and women that come in and teach business owners how to be even better business owners. There is a surge of life coaching going on in the nation right now, too, and relationship coaches help couples and families put their relationships back together. But have you ever heard of a human-canine relationship coach? It’s all here inside another great episode of Animal Wise America.

The Animal Wise America Podcast
Season 1, Episode 6 — “A Visit with Dr. Jennifer Wardlaw, Concierge Surgeon”

Alright, envision this: You are out enjoying a beautiful day, playing stick (define “stick”) with your pooch. All of a sudden, you hear a yelp and a squeal, and your beloved furball comes running back at you, holding its rear leg up, which is too painful to even set down on the ground. What are you going to do? Or this: your cat is let outside now that the weather is warm, and but it doesn’t come home until the next day. There is a gash on its shoulder and the leg is just hanging. The cat has a fracture that is comminuted. What now? Both emergency situations can be evaluated by a general practitioner veterinarian, but what about the surgical repairs that may be required? What if your veterinarian is not able to perform these procedures? What are you going to do?

Today, we are going to inform you of your options! Listen in as we talk about invasive procedures for your pets and introduce you to a option that you (and your veterinarian) may not even be aware of on this episode of Animal Wise America!

Season 1, Episode 4 — “A Visit with The K-9 Pack Leader, Robert Laut”

Have you even been walking in the park and witnessed little dogs dressed in sweaters, maybe donning a little sun visor, or having bows in their ears, or being pushed in a stroller? Have you ever gone into PetSmart and noted that little white dog decked out in a polka-dotted sundress, being carried in her owner’s designer purse? What response is triggered in you? Are you an, “Awww, that’s cute!” kind of person? Are you the one standing there, open-mouthed, wondering what the heck is wrong with the person pushing the stroller? Are you the one running right out to purchase the same sweater or stroller or bag so that you can share this experience with your little fluff muffin? Or are you like me, wondering whether or not that little dog is actually having a good time? Do you wonder what that dog is thinking? I personally gamble to myself on when that little dog is going to bite someone.

It’s time to address those questions and likely many more, inside this episode of Animal Wise America.
